Everyone relies on some method of brainstorming and if you don’t, you need to. It can have great effects on your business outcomes and opportunities.
Whether you are brainstorming a name for your company, a new marketing campaign, a new product line, or the right approach to a problem or development, brainstorming is key. Moreover, brainstorming in a group is crucial. Brainstorming is the hidden component to the success of anything in business. Blindly rushing a project without proper consideration and thought could lead to less than favorable results. When it comes to brainstorming, having a group of people is better than a group of one for several reasons. Here are four tips about brainstorming practices.
1.) The more you have the better.
The more people you include in a brainstorming session, the more results or thoughts you have to pull from. The more people you involve in a session, the more creativity conspires between participating members, e.g. bouncing ideas back and forth. In addition, the more sessions you have, the better (to an extent). Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor did just one Trojan alone win the battle of Troy. Continue to build upon each session and you will be amazed at the results.
2.) They think of things you don’t or won’t.
Amongst the numbers of people you can recruit you will find a major common theme: No one thinks exactly the same. Some people will endlessly supply thoughts, some will contribute only one solid idea, some won’t contribute at all until after the session when they come to you and offer a thought that later developed. Building on that, these contributors, while they not only contribute differently in that way, the thoughts they have themselves will be diverse. Diverse ideas strengthen your session by providing complex, new, or fresh ideas and perspectives for consideration.
3.) They know things you don’t or won’t.
I can think back and count numerous times when talking with someone, or a group of people, that when I explained my idea it instantly became invalid, on a number of levels. Sometimes, for instance, planning an event for a certain day or time you might think is perfect. However, a brainstormer announces that the city has a fundraiser that night, or the facility you want is booked or closed. On another scale, sometimes they may offer alternatives or suggestions that better your ideas based off of their connections or expertise. Each person has their value and contributes exclusively in their own right.
4.) They will see things you don’t or won’t.
“Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity.” H.Jackson Brown JR. Brainstorming is all about discovering or creating opportunity. The more you brainstorm, the more people you include the more opportunities are discovered. These people you are calling on to help iron out an idea may just come up with a better one and in that you may just find your next million dollar deal.
If you think that writing thoughts or words down on paper is good enough for a brainstorming session and that the only person you need to involve is yourself, you’re wrong. Consider getting your friends, family, mentors, employees, or so on together and launching a full scale brainstorm. You will see many more opportunities arise from diverse ideas from diverse people each one knowing something different from the other.
